Woolamaloo in Ontario 2014

9/16/14 – Cleveland before sunrise
-
-
About 7:15 am – right after sunrise
-
-
Heading into a North wind
-
-
Cleveland Sunrise
-
-
About 35 miles from Cleveland. The Key Bank building is still visible.
-
-
The view north at the international border.
-
-
It calmed down about 15 miles from Ontario.
-
-
Finally using my Canadian courtesy flag.
-
-
Had dinner at the Bayside Brewing Company. Their beer was quite good. I met a retired pharmacist from Saskatchewan named Ben and had a great time.
-
-
9/17/14 – Had peameal (Canadian bacon) for breakfast at Eau Buoy Diner.
-

Erieau is basically a sandbar that juts out into Lake Erie and creates Rondeau Bay.
-
-
The main boulevard is about a mile long and straight. The houses on the south side overlook Lake Erie. The houses on the north side overlook Rondeau Harbor. Nice.

-
Lake Erie
-
-
For lunch, I had poutine and perch at the Sandbar. I should probably have Kraft Dinner tonight for dinner.
-
-
9/18/14 – I left Erieau at 5:45. Holy crap, it was dark. I managed not to bonk into anything. I got the sails up before sunrise.
-
-
The engine is off, the sails are up and the sun came up behind me. It does not get much better.
-
-
Today was perfect. Winds were in the 12-16 range and I sailed for 7 of the 9 hours to Leamington reaching speeds of 7 knots.
-
-
The wind moved around a little. I sailed wing and wing for over an hour but still averaged around 5 knots during that time.
-
-
Point Pelee – the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland.
-
-
Hey, check out the rug my mom made for the boat. Isn’t that great?
-
-
Docked in Leamington.
-
-
No pictures of food tonight. I had perch and poutine again. Although tonight, I also had a couple Caesars. (A Canadian version of a Bloody Mary using Clamato – delicious.)
-
-
9/19/14 – Leamington Marina is absolutely beautiful.
-
-
I had breakfast at Gaspard’s Cafe. They have “homemade” sausage there that was great. I like that they served it with a slice of local tomato.
-
-
I had a light lunch because I intend to have an early dinner and get to bed early. I had a Tim Horton’s Double-Double and a cruller. How’s that for eating like a local?
-
-
9/20/14 – When I woke up, the wind was blowing pretty hard. With the storm coming tonight and tomorrow, I’ll be in Leamington at least until Monday.
-
-
I walked into town and got pancakes – as a medium for some maple syrup. They look okay but they weren’t. They were burnt on the other side. Did they think I wouldn’t notice?
-
-
Beach and waves just west of the marina.
-
-
Hockey? Why, yes, thank you. This was really fun. The players are about 15 years old. Unfortunately, the home team lost 7-0.
-
-
Right outside the hockey arena were 20 trailers of tomatoes. I almost walked right past them before I realized what they were.
-
-
I got really lucky here. Look closely. You can see a tractor pulling two trailers that are being unloaded. But even cooler is the conveyor full of tomatoes going into the factory.
-
-
A giant tomato.
-
-
9/21/14 – What an interesting night. The storm hit at 8:15 pm and it was blowing over 30 knots. They forecast 50 mm rain for the first hour. I believe it. This morning is beautiful but it is still blowing really hard.
-
-
The peameal breakfast with a tomato plate. Delicious.
-
-
9/22/14 – After spending the morning working, I made the 13 mile sail from Leamington to Scudder Marina on Pelee Island. It was a nice sail and it took me about two and a half hours. This is the view north out of Pelee.
-
-
Scudder Marina, Pelee Island
-
-
I got a pretty nice sunset that night.
-
-
9/23/14 – I left Pelee Island before sunrise to head back to Cleveland.
-
-
I had a hitchhiker for a couple hours.
-
-
After doing some research, I think my passenger was a female Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker. She is a type of woodpecker and happens to be the state bird of Alabama. She rode with me until we got about four miles from shore.
-
-
About 11 miles from Cleveland, I ran across a MAST buoy. I think it was the Sand Merchant that wrecked 10/17/1936.
